Word lists

The practice words are based on wordfreq by Robyn Speer. The data is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). We adapted it: filtered by each language’s alphabet, curated, and checked against dictionaries. The adapted word lists are licensed under the same terms.

wordfreq contains data from these sources:

Practice texts

The texts you copy in phase 3 are excerpts from works in the public domain, with spelling gently modernized where needed. The full texts come from Project Gutenberg. The English version uses excerpts from these works:

In addition, we write everyday sentences ourselves, using the checked word lists.

Dictionaries and exclusion lists

We check every practice word against Hunspell dictionaries from the LibreOffice Dictionaries project. The dictionaries are only a tool and are not part of the website:

  • German: igerman98 by Björn Jacke with extensions by Franz Michael Baumann (GNU GPL 2 or 3)
  • English: SCOWL by Kevin Atkinson, affix file based on Ispell by Geoff Kuenning (SCOWL license, BSD)
  • Spanish: RLA-ES (GNU GPL 3, GNU LGPL 3, or MPL 1.1)
  • French: Dictionnaires orthographiques français by Olivier R., Grammalecte (MPL 2.0)
  • Italian: dictionary by LibreItalia, Marina Latini, based on the “Dizionario italiano” (GNU GPL 3)
  • Portuguese (Brazil): VERO by Raimundo Moura and team (GNU LGPL 3 and MPL)

To filter offensive terms, we use, among others, the List of Dirty, Naughty, Obscene, and Otherwise Bad Words (CC BY 4.0).

Keyboard layouts

The Windows layouts come from the layout tables on kbdlayout.info. The macOS layouts come from Unicode CLDR (release 43), © Unicode, Inc., licensed under the Unicode License Agreement – Data Files and Software.

Fonts

Inter by Rasmus Andersson, JetBrains Mono by JetBrains and Cormorant Garamond by Christian Thalmann (Catharsis Fonts, for the diploma and certificates), all under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The fonts are delivered with the website and are not loaded from an external service.
