How the method works

  • A little, every day

Ten to twenty minutes a day beat one long evening a week. Breaks and sleep help lock in what you practiced.

    More: A little, every day
  • Accuracy first, then speed

A lesson counts as passed once you type it with 97% accuracy. After that, you build speed with a personal goal.

    More: Accuracy first, then speed
  • The slow phase is part of it

For the first two to four weeks, you type more slowly than before. Stick with it, and the switch pays off.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

Plan for roughly 20 to 35 hours of practice spread over 6 to 10 weeks until you type reliably without looking. Most people are back to their old speed after one to three months. Short daily sessions work better than long blocks.

Is touch typing still worth learning?

Yes, if you type on a computer regularly. Research shows that what matters most for speed is a consistent mapping of each key to one finger. That is exactly what touch typing trains, and your eyes can stay on the text.

Where can I learn touch typing for free?

Right here: typando is free, needs no sign-up, and works in six languages with the common keyboard layouts. We compare other free tools in our guide.

What is the best way to practice?

Practice every day, ideally in one or two short sessions of 10 to 20 minutes, rather than one long session a week. Focus on accuracy first: a lesson counts as passed at 97%. You build speed later, in small steps, with your personal speed goal.

What does WPM mean?

WPM stands for words per minute; a word counts as five characters, spaces included. So 40 WPM is 200 characters per minute. WPM and characters per minute
